Jungle
2022
Print on cotton paper
90 x 60 cm (each)

Jungle is the title of a series of photographs each portraying the pen of an entrepreneur.
The pens have the characteristic feature of representing, through engravings or prints, an animal chosen by the owner because it is considered relevant to his or her personality.
The set of photos creates a kind of jungle that represents the behavioral extension of the entrepreneurs of reference.
The relationship between human beings and work, as well as behavioural patterns linked to changes in society, are the focus of Antonio Della Guardia’s research, which in recent years has concentrated on the impact that certain work patterns have on the lives of individuals as well as on the community. He uses drawing, sculpture, photography, video and installation to describe these dynamics.

ANTONIO DELLA GUARDIA

On the boundary between scientific investigation and poetic experience, Antonio Della Guardia’s research is focused on behavioral models linked to social changes, in particular on the relationship between human beings and work. Through drawing, photography, video and installation the artist highlights their dynamics, imagining and showing their impact on the individual as well as community life.
A painfully ironic reference to certain working environments is embodied in this work and summarized in its title: Jungle (2018) is a series of four photographs, each portraying a pen held in the hand of an anonymous entrepreneur, in an unidentified workspace; each of these pens bears, engraved or printed, the image of an animal chosen by the owner as an extension of his own personality.

Hierarchical systems and occasionally perverted behavioural acts, the complicated balances of the food-professional chain are analyzed by Della Guardia with the sharpness of an anthropological and sociological re- search, well aware of the presence of productivity logics and personal ambitions, which require human-animal beings to get even faster, more aggressive, smarter, stronger.

Antonio Della Guardia was born in Salerno in 1990. He works in Salerno and Naples. Among his solo shows: Per un prossimo reale, Fondazione Pastificio Cerere, Rome (2021); La luce dell’inchiostro ottenebra, Galleria Tiziana Di Caro, Naples (2018); Index, Studioconcreto, Lecce (2018). In 2022 he has been awarded with Premio Teogonia. Among his group shows and projects: Una Boccata d’Arte, a project by Fondazione Elpis, in collaboration with Galleria Continua, various location (2022), Panorama Procida (2021), Burning Speech, Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Turin (2021); There is no time to enjoy the sun, Fondazione Morra Greco, Naples (2021); The corrosion of character, l’uomo flessibile, Izolyatsia Platform for Cultural Initiatives, Kiev (2019).
Antonio Della Guardia is among the artists invited at BIENALSUR 2023, International Biennial of Contemporary Art of the South. Della Guardia’s attitude takes on an anthropological and sociological character that leads him towards the creation of works whose motive is to be sought in geography, traditions, customs, all always on the borderline between scientific investigation and poetic experience, drawing a boundary between reality and imagination that is ever more subtle and sometimes imperceptible.
